Forney Firefighters Stand-by For 7 1/2 Hrs. on Gas Leaks
On Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at approx. 9:50 a.m. the Forney Fire Dept. was called to investigate a gas leak in the area of South Center St. and College St. Upon arrival they found that a construction machine had torn into a four inch natural gas pipe while digging and caused a sizable leak. The firefighters blocked off the area and called for Atmos Energy to respond in order to repair the leak. Forney Public Works and Police assisted in securing the area while waiting for the gas company. Area houses were checked for any gas that might have collected in them and all were found to be safe. About an hour after the first accident took place the fire fighters received another call for a gas leak at Pinson Road and Southlake. As the fire dept. and public works representatives arrived they found that a construction digging machine had also torn into a four inch gas line and natural gas under high pressure was spewing from the leak. Again, fire fighters, police, and public works employees blocked of area streets and secured houses for safety. Atmos Energy was called for repairs. After about three hours in 103 degree heat the Pinson Road leak was repaired and the City of Forney crews were able to allow normal traffic in the area. However, the gas emergency on South Center street was still on-going and after 7 ½ hours in the heat the firefighters were finally able to head back to the station. A total of 20 firefighters were used on the two gas leak emergency scenes and special thanks go out to the Forney Police, Public Works, Forney 9-1-1 Dispatchers, Terrell Volunteer Fire Dept., Kaufman County Emergency Services Unit, and East Texas E.M.S. for assisting in the incidents. Several area citizens helped out with water and use of their shade trees also.
