News from Forney, TX - ‘Twenty Peaceful Minutes East of Downtown Dallas’

Chick-Fil-A, Sport Clips, Hong Kong Express, Chase & More

There’s a long list of updates this morning, which is great! After a fairly slow time around the Christmas holiday, construction has really picked back up in Forney. Current projects that are confirmed and under construction are: Chick-Fil-A (near Capital One, Highway 80 & 548), Sport Clips (Shafer Plaza, near Coldstone, Hwy 80 & 548), Hong Kong Express (Shafer Plaza, near Coldstone), a Chase bank (Between Coldstone & Highway 80, Shafer Plaza), Overtime Sports Cafe (near Peak Physical Therapy, Hwy 80 & Pinson), Joe’s Pizza & Pasta (also near Peak Physical Therapy, Hwy 80 & Pinson) and Mustang Crossing Dental Care (Shafer Plaza, near Coldstone, Hwy 80 & 548). For more specifics, read on…

Here’s what’s going on with these various projects:

Chick-Fil-A: under construction, it’s the free-standing building you see in front of Lowe’s, near Capital One. The foundation has been poured, and the exterior walls are up. No roof yet, last time I checked. Last I heard, they were hoping for a mid-May opening, but I’m not sure if construction is on track with that schedule or not.

Sport Clips: drywall was delivered yesterday, so they’re moving right along. I haven’t heard when the grand opening will be, but since they’re going into an already-finished space in Shafer Plaza near Coldstone and the Cingular store, it shouldn’t take too terribly long to setup, perhaps a month or two.

Hong Kong Express: they put up their sign well before Sport Clips, but other than post their permit on the door, I haven’t seen much happen here yet, and Sport Clips may end up opening before Hong Kong Express, which will anchor the corner of Shafer Plaza between Coldstone and the Sonic. Again, since the building itself was finished some time ago, they’re just finishing out their space, so in theory it won’t take more than a few months, but they don’t seem to be moving too fast just yet.

Chase Bank: this is the large building you see between Shafer Plaza and Highway 80, right along 548. The frame is mostly finished, but building a bank can take some time, so it’s probably still a few months off.

Overtime Sports Cafe: this is in the same building as Peak Physical Therapy and Warezabouts on the north side of Highway 80 near Pinson - the name of that shopping center escapes me, but I’m sure someone can post a comment and remind me. A sign is up, with a URL on it for the Cafe, but each time I’ve driven by, the wind has had the sign turned around where I can’t read the URL. I’ll get that URL and post it ASAP.

Joe’s Pizza & Pasta: in the same building as the Overtime Sports Cafe. I drove past here a few weeks ago, hoping for a new place to stop and have lunch, but it wasn’t quite open yet. I did see several people there working on getting it ready, so hopefully they will be opening soon.

Mustang Crossing Dental Care: this office anchors the other end of the first Shafer Plaza building from Coldstone, near the Cingular store, at Highway 80 & 548. It sounds like their office is complete, because they’ve begun sending out postcards saying they’re now scheduling appointments. (Update: if you found this page looking for information about Mustang Crossing Dental Care, their phone number is 972.552.5128)

Also, Care United, the urgent care center that is coming to Shafer Plaza this summer, now has a billboard up along Highway 80 that you can see as you’re traveling from the Mesquite/Sunnyvale area into Forney.

Finally, a few of rumors: Wing Stop, a Mexican restaurant in Shafer Plaza, Starbucks opening in June, possibly in the building currently under construction in Shafer Plaza with a drive-through window on the side that faces Highway 80.

If you have any info on these rumors or any new rumors, as always, feel free to email them to me at josh@twentypeacefulminutes.com! Thanks!

My friend and I stopped by the new shopping center just north of Whataburger, next to Lowe’s. There is a sign in the left window for the Wing Stop. We saw the developer and stopped to ask him what else was going in. He said besides the Wing Stop, there will be a nail salon and a bar and grill called Lucky’s (the same owner as The Mat in Uptown). Those are the only things going in as of today (3/30/07).

The website for Overtime Sports Cafe is http://www.otsportscafe.com. There are pictures of the construction on the site, as well as contact information. You can also print a job application if anyone is interested. Saw the sign today, and thought I’d update you all.

Overtime Sports cafe is definitely open now. I’ve eaten there twice - it was recommended by a friend of mine and I’m glad he did. I’d definitely recommend it to any one else.

(I just wish they had two way traffic on the service road.)
